Transform Stress into Vitality

WHAT IS STRESS?

Our biological, psychological and evolutinary responses to stress from our environment define us as human.  Imagine at a day in the ice age, suddenly, a saber tooth tiger leaps out to attack the man.His instinctual response is either fight or flight.  Yet, for such a response to occur, a complex organic process in his body must be activated to allow his instinct to take action.

First, the Hypothalamus response to the attack by sending a signal to the pituitary.

Pituitary then sends down to adrenal gland to pump the blood with adrenaline.
Heart and lungs increase their function to give more blood and oxygen for the fight or flight response.  In the case with the saber tooth tiger, his likely response would be flight.
At this instinctual level of dealing with threats, our body functions optimally.  Such stresses are periodical and not pervasive. But in our modern society, stresses are pervasive and chronic.  Some challenges and threats will remain and we can neither fight nor escape from them. For instance, an overtly aggressive boss, abusive boyfriends, husband or traffic jam, all these are challenges which stress our body and mind without giving us the real choice of fighting it or running away from it.
So what happen when there is chronic stress when we have to stay in the situation?  Scientists have found disturbing factors of damages to the brain, heart and kidney in animal experiments.Chronic sufferer of stresses has a lower level of immune response to fight off sickness.Long term abuses reduce the victims into a dejected state of utter helplessness. Their hippocampus within the brain shrinks to such constant distress. In this helpless state, scientists have found that most of the subjects showed a lower immune response to infection.  In other word, a chronic stressed victim will get sick easier and take a longer time to heal.

How does Taoist practice like Taiji Quan or Qigong transform stress into vitality?

As part of my college thesis, I conducted a long term two years study amongst college students.  The hypothesis of the experiment is very simple:since stress will increase in a normal college year with finals, and tests, students who practice a form of meditative exercises should able to reduce their stress level as compare to two other groups, the Crew Team who do strenuous competitive activities and the couch potatoes who just study without any regular or formal exercises.

After a two years monitoring with both interview and standardized stress questionnaires, I found that indeed there is a statistically significant difference between the stress level between the Taiji group as compare to the control groups, both the Crew Team and the Couch Potatoes.  The result indicates that as the initial stress started to increase, the Taiji group and the Crew Team were able to show significant reduction in their stress level while the Couch Potatoes showed sign of stress symptoms: anxiety, overeating and lower self images.  However, as the stress increase further with finals, the Crew Team started to also showed sign of anxiety which indicates that competitive exercises is useful initially for low level of stress but ineffective in dealing with intense level of distress.  While the Taiji group did also show increase level of anxiety but started to level off

My theory as to why Taiji students can somehow transform the stress into energy lies in their ability to redirect the stress. This is the basic principle of Push Hands.  When an opponent pushes a Taiji player, she will redirect the force and channel it to the ground.  Thus, the Taiji essential of rooting and keeping the hips soft and loose is crucial in such re-channeling the force of a push. When one confronts a challenge, our attitude, frame of mind is crucial in how well we can manage the stress.  By taking time to practice meditative movement arts, we can resettle our biological system back to balance.  Or else, the body’s endocrine system will be driven to a cascading hyper-drive which in the long term will causes our health to degenerate, making us more susceptible to the flings and arrows of sickness, depression and auto-immune diseases. Not to mention, the fail marriages, a life of anxiety.
As a footnote, I have written the above thesis as part of my psychological degree requirement in 1976-78.But, fate would have it that instead of pursuing a career in psychotherapy, I fall in love with Dance Choreography.  Now, twenty some years later, teaching Taiji and Qigong, I again realize how precious this Taoist healing art contribute to humanity, especially in our time of deep fears and strives.  I hope future scientists will explore the scientific basis of the therapeutic elements in Taiji and Qigong practices.

For me personally, being a teacher of Tao is a privilege and great taste in the heart of living fully in each moment.  It is in living fully in each moment that spontaneous action rises up to deal with the stress and challenge at hand without the typical anxiety.  For fear only exists in the past and future, never in the present moment. For during a dangerous situation, most people are too busy to be scare.

A note of caution to the beginner.  Do not try to self help yourself.Rather, spend sometime to find a good teacher to guide you in finding the perfect meditative practice for your particular needs and profiles.I have personally received numerous emails about the harms to the beginners.  Some of the Qigong books in bookstore are dangerous especially the ones with esoteric claims of power and healing. The following is just one recent sample of an email.  I have deleted theperson’s identify and the author’s name in respect of their own privacy.

“Dear Sifu Hon,
Hello, I was researching Qi gong online and I saw your info. I looked for a teacher that could help me, but I only found certified students with little experience. I have a situation that has devastated me greatly. I got a book by M___, C___, and I started to do the practices for about a year, but the side effects have been devastating. I experienced blurred vision, lung problems, organ and gland problems and other symptoms. Please understand how greatly this has affected me. I am only 24, and this created a serious health problem.
I have gone to several doctors and two acupuncturists. I was dismissed by the last acupuncturist because he said he could not help me. I have been diagnosed with emphysema and several other problems. I had no clue Qi gong was this dangerous? I have been searching for months, and this has been a painful experience. I saw your info-page and I believe you can help me. Sifu Han I am out of options. This has not only stunted me physically, but it has halted me spiritually.
I am a person of strong spirit; however this has been so devastating, that I need serious help.
I have not been able to attend classes due to lack of bladder control and blurred vision.
Please respond. I am not a selfish person and I am very strong mentally, but I need some help.
I used to compete as an amateur boxer in college and later I studied karate. I trained vigorously and was quite strong. However this experience has shown me the power of the internal styles. Unfortunately I had to injure myself to find this out. “

My response to the above person is simple that he should stop all training and begin to find competent master in Qigong to correct and realign his energy. It seemed that he is a young man with remarkable energy matrix and reacted unusually strong to the book. This is a case of mismatch between the practitioner and the type of Qigong. Most likely, it is an strong allergic reaction to this style, just like food allergy of peanuts or lobsters. To detoxify, the best action will be to go to nature, to have mother earth to heal oneself.Once a month, a hike in the wood will be very healing for such a person.
